A project in business and science is a collaborative enterprise, frequently involving research or design, that is carefully planned to achieve a particular aim.

Overview

The word project comes from the Latin word projectum from the Latin verb proicere, "to throw something forwards" which in turn comes from pro-, which denotes something that precedes the action of the next part of the word in time (paralleling the Greek πρό) and iacere, "to throw". The word "project" thus actually originally meant "something that comes before anything else happens".

When the English language initially adopted the word, it referred to a plan of something, not to the act of actually carrying this plan out. Something performed in accordance with a project became known as an "object".

Specific uses

School and university

At school, educational institute and university, a project is a research assignment given to a student which generally requires a larger amount of effort and more independent work than is involved in a normal essay assignment. It requires students to undertake their own fact-finding and analysis, either from library/internet research or from gathering data empirically. The written report that comes from the project is usually in the form of a dissertation, which will contain sections on the project's inception, methods of inquiry, analysis, findings and conclusions.

How can I make my project quantative instead or qualitative?
Q. For school I'm planning on doing a project on peoples reactions and behaviors. It's simple. I just need to see how will people react to different fashions/"labels" (goth, prep, nerd, tomboy etc.) at the mall, when asking them for the time or spare change. But seeing their reactions would be considered a quality, and i need to find a way to measure something in the project. Is there anyway to make my project more advanced that will involve some sort of measurement?( and counting the people whom respond positively and negatively doesn't count. My science teacher said there is a way, yet refuses to hint me, or help me with it.

A. Can you breakdown the people who responded negatively or positively into its own category? For instance percentage of males vs females who responded positively or negatively. Or how about breaking it down by age. What percentage of people ages 15-18, 19-25, 25-30, 30 and above etc responded positively or negatively. Or you can ask people to rate their negative or positive responses, instead of just a like or dislike reply. For instance on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being really negative and 5 being positive, how do you feel about the terms/labels goth, prep etc.

What is a good science fair project for a third grader?
Q. My daughter is 8-years old and they have to do a science fair project for their class. She loves animals so we have been trying to think of some ideas related to animals. We also have 2 cats so a project using them, we think, would be fun as well. Any suggestions for the project?

A. theres always the environment experiment. for example you could put each cat in seperate rooms and test for like an hour or so. you could have one room with lights on and windows open with soft classical music playing..a relaxed, home-like environment and in the other room no lights, quiet or disturbing music like a tense environment. record their eating habbits (while in the rooms) and sleeping and things like that. i wouldnt make it too complecated if shes only 8 but it shouldnt be too hard. maybe do this for a week, 4 or 5 days? more ideas are online everywhere. sciencebuddies.com might have something...if not try google-ing something like "simple science experiment cats" or "easy animal science projects"
