Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

George Santayana Historia (Allegory of History) By Nikolaos Gysis (1892) The Historian By E. Irving Couse (1902)

History (from Greek ἱστορία - historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation") is the study of the human past. Scholars who write about history are called historians. It is a field of research which uses a narrative to examine and analyse the sequence of events, and it sometimes attempts to investigate objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events. Historians debate the nature of history and its usefulness. This includes discussing the study of the discipline as an end in itself and as a way of providing "perspective" on the problems of the present. The stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the legends surrounding King Arthur) are usually classified as cultural heritage rather than the "disinterested investigation" needed by the discipline of history. Events of the past prior to written record are considered prehistory.

When in rock history where you could start your rock career?
Q. If I can choose which era in rock history so that I could start my rock career, I would have belonged in the British Invasion period of the 1960s when bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Who gained popularity. Being the John Lennon/Mick Jagger/Roger Daltrey type of leader of the group, I would shape rock history with concept albums, psychedelia, and rebellious music. What about you? When in rock history where you could start your rock career? Why?

A. London in the mid - late 1960s. Why? Because that's where and when some of my favourite bands got started. Also, the way in which you could get into the music industry back then ~ you played lots of little bars and clubs, worked your way around, and no one batted an eyelid if you shuffled the band around a bit as you went. And because I've always had a bit of a 'thing' about the 1960s, especially for the music scene :)

What kind of history did they teach during medieval times?
Q. Not the history of medieval times, but the history of the history of it I guess.

A. First, there was no public education in that era. The vast majority of people got no education, including learning to read and write. For those few who were educated, most instruction was in Latin. They learned to read and write it, and learned history from the Bible, as well as studying lives of saints. Some had knowledge of Greek and Roman historical writing and literature, but such knowledge would have been very unusual before the Renaissance. Students of certain subjects such as medicine, law, astronomy, rhetoric, and mathematics were usually trained in the Greek and Roman works relevant to their specialties.

What should I do for my European History project?
Q. For our final project in AP European History, we are supposed to design a "museum" exhibit. We need to write up a brochure explaining the historical significance of our exhibit and then either build or show pieces of art, history, models, etc. In past years people have had art slide shows or built model WWII planes. I'm having trouble thinking of a creative idea though. It just has to have to do with European History from the Renaissance to present time. Thanks for any help!

A. If you want to something for your European History project I would go with WWII it's one of Europe's biggest moments in history and their are a lot of things to pull from it. There a few ideas I have you can do. 1. You can build model tanks instead of planes. Gert a Tiger or Panzer tank and the get an T-34 tank. Compare the strategics of each tank and why the other tank dominated and helped it country achieve victory in battle 2. You can build a elaborate time. Just get some poster board together print of some pictures. Show major points in the war. Start the time line 1939-1945 showing Hitler's rise to power and the fall of the third reich 3. You can build a uniform from scratch pick your country Germany, Berlin, US, or Russia 4. You… [cont.]

History is the study of human behavior through time. When used as the name of a field of study, history refers to the study and interpretation of past humans, families and societies as preserved primarily through written sources.

  • The end of history is, alas, also the end of the dustbins of history. There are no longer any dustbins for disposing of old ideologies, old regimes, old values. Where are we going to throw Marxism, which actually invented the dustbins of history? (Yet there is some justice here since the very people who invented them have fallen in.) Conclusion: if there are no more dustbins of history, this is because History itself has become a dustbin. It has become its own dustbin, just as the planet itself is becoming its own dustbin.

  • I don’t know much about history, and I wouldn’t give a nickel for all the history in the world. It means nothing to me. History is more or less bunk. It's tradition. We don't want tradition. We want to live in the present and the only history that is worth a tinker's damn is the history we make today.
