From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Europe (pronounced /ˈjɜrəp/, /ˈjʊərəp/) is, by convention, one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, Europe is generally divided from Asia to its east by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, and by the Caucasus Mountains to the southeast. Europe is washed upon to the north by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the Black Sea and the waterways connecting it to the Mediterranean. Yet the borders for Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are somewhat arbitrary, as the term continent can refer to a cultural and political distinction or a physiographic one. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 states, Russia is the largest by both area and population, while the Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 731 million or about 11% of the world's population; however, according to the United Nations (medium estimate), Europe's share may fall to about 7% in 2050. Europe, in particular Ancient Greece, is often considered to be the birthplace of Western culture. It played a predominant role in global affairs from the 16th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonialism. Between the 17th and 20th centuries, European nations controlled at various times the Americas, most of Africa, Oceania, and large portions of Asia. Both World Wars were ignited in Central Europe, greatly contributing to a decline in European dominance in world affairs by the mid-20th century as the United States and Soviet Union took prominence. During the Cold War Europe was divided along the Iron Curtain between NATO in the West and the Warsaw Pact in the East. European integration led to the formation of the Council of Europe and the European Union in Western Europe, both of which have been expanding eastward since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. What country do you think is the best in central Europe to live in and explain why. Thank you for your help so much. All were bad answers. Thanks for the long answer with Germany. Germany Germany is s the world's third largest economy by nominal GDP and the largest exporter of goods in 2007. In absolute terms, Germany allocates the second biggest annual budget of development aid in the world. Most of Germany has a temperate climate in which humid westerly winds predominate. Winters there are mild and summers tend to be cool, though temperatures can exceed 30 C (86 F) for prolonged periods. In the east, the climate is more continental; winters can be very cold, summers can be very warm, and long dry periods are often recorded. Central and southern Germany are transition regions which vary from moderately oceanic to continental. Again, the maximum temperature can exceed 30 C (86 F) in summer. If you could depart May 21, I see San Francisco-Manchester available currently with KLM for $716rt total; LAX-London $726 with Air New Zealand, British Airways, Virgin, and American (all nonstop). I checked from SFO and LAX to all gateways in Italy and Switzerland, plus MAN and LON. It looks like flights to UK are cheaper during this time frame by about $300. From London, you can book separately to another city, and return back to London from a different city, using Alternatively, take a flight with Virgin America or JetBlue or another airline to NYC (JFK Airport), then switch to to Italy. They often have very good offers for departures in May. Answered by Mr. T's Pretty Cuzzin - Tue Jan 22 08:12:33 2008 What is the best place in europe to live for a year and work?
Q. My friends and I are planning to move to Europe for a year and work. I was wondering which place would be the best to live. Asked by bigshot226 - Tue Dec 12 23:00:18 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I have lived in a few different European countries. My favorite so far, by far, has been Vienna, Austria. I speak German, but even if you don't, most people there can speak English, and because there are lots of tourists, some things are in English, too. It's a beautiful old city, lots of fun to see/live in. I was there for four years. With public transportation, you pretty much don't even need a car. And if you need to travel somewhere else, trains are great, and not too expensive. Also, Austria borders on 7 other countries. So it's easy to go out and see new places. It's also a very clean city, unlike other large cities.
